How to protect your privacy on the internet

Why is it important to protect your privacy?

Here are a few reasons why protecting your privacy on the internet is important:

  • To protect personal data and safeguarding sensitive information.
  • To protect against unwanted advertising.
  • To mitigate stalking and location tracking.
  • To prevent people impersonating you online and offline.

Quick and simple ways to protect your privacy on the internet

1. Use a stronger and unique password

Ways to create stronger and unique password:

  • Include numbers and symbols.
  • Avoid using guessable information like your birthday as your password.
  • Use different passwords for different accounts.
  • Don’t rely on the saving password features that your browser or any other application may offer.
  • Preferably, make your password memorable enough to not need to write the password down.

2. Enable the Two-Factor Authentication (2FA) if possible

  • This makes it harder for any intruders trying to break into your online accounts by making them need to have access to either an email account or an actual phone in order to access your online accounts.

3. BE CAUTIOUS ON WHAT INFORMATION YOU SHARE

  • This one is self-explanatory, any information you share can be used to help intruders impersonating you and other malicious intentions.
  • Don’t share information that you don’t want people knowing, this applies to not only in Social Media, but also in Account Creation, Games, etc.

4. Use DuckDuckGo or another privacy-focused search engine

  • Privacy-focused search engines do not collect users’ data and track your search activity (or at least they claim to be), which makes them much more safer than search engines like Google.

5. DO NOT DOWNLOAD ANY FILES THAT IS OF UNKNOWN ORIGIN

  • Files you download may contain a virus or adware. Such files are more common if they are of unknown origin.
