How to Recover from being Mentally Broken
There are two ways you can recover from the feeling of being mentally broken, either by gaining a sense of purpose or by gaining a sense of achievement.
The former treats the actual disease, while the latter simply treats the symptom. These two ways however are interconnected, if you purse one way, you indirectly pursue the other one too.
How to Gain a Sense of Achievement
Gaining a sense of achievement differs from one person to another, after all, we all have different values and different perspectives in what is considered to be virtuous or wrongdoings.
1. Identify a Virtuous Endeavor You Can Pursue
The first thing you need to do is find out what activity you can actively pursue, and the keyword there is actively pursue. When you complete it, the task must make you feel a great sense of accomplishment.
And these types of tasks tend to be virtuous in nature—virtuous in the sense that you find them virtuous.
For Example: If you find being hardworking, industrious, productive, and diligent to be virtuous, then engage in activities that relates to any one of these virtues.
It can be as simple as creating poetry (productive and industrious) or dedicating quite a lot of time and effort to one craft like bodybuilding and actually staying in it (hardworking and diligent).
2. Engage in the Acvtivity you Chose
Once you have identified a virtuous endeavor that you can pursue, do it. Just do it. Do the work immediately before your mind wanders off and you procrastinate.
3. Find an Acitivity that Sticks
Repeat Step 1 and 2 until you find something that sticks. This step is essential as it will help give you a sense of purpose in life.
4. Stay consistent
This is the simplest, but the hardest step. They say that the first steps are always the hardest, but I say that getting back up again after falling down is harder.
Why is it harder to restart good habits?
This is because your lack of action when done long enough will become a habit, and as we all know, humans are creatures of habits. That's why whenever you catch yourself procrastinating, snap out of it and get back to doing step 1 and 2.
How to Find your Sense of Purpose
Sometimes you don't even need to read this section because you have already found your purpose from doing the step 1 and 2 from the how to gain a sense of achievement section.
But just in case you are still feeling a little lost or out of place, here are some tips to help you.
1. Do a quick Self-Reflection
Answer the following questions:
- What activities makes you happy without any drawbacks in your psyche?
- Do you feel lost in life? If so, what do you think is that reason for this?
If you can't answer question 1, follow step 1 through 4 on how to gain a sense of achievement. Once identified, keep doing these activities, it may not help give you a sense of purpose, but it will hopefully buy you so time before you start feeling depressive.
There are no right or wrong answers in question 2, it is just there to give yourself insight and an idea on how to tackle your predicament.
2. Try Creating Something
Maybe you feel depressive because you lack activites that uses your creative prowess. Try doing creative works like making art, poetry, coding a program, making real-life objects, writing blog posts, etc.
