5 Reasons on Why Recreational Activities are Important
Reasons Why Recreational Activities are Important
1. We are creatures of emotion
We are creatures of emotions, which means we are at risk of mental breakdowns. And mental breakdowns typically occur due to unresolved stresses that we accumulate from everyday life.
Recreational activities can help us relieving this threat by reducing our stress levels and promoting a sense of relaxation.
These recreational activities can be physical or mental in nature (for example, sports and PC gaming, hiking and book reading, etc.). It does not matter; as long as it promotes a sense of well-being, it is serving its purpose.
2. Provides a sense of being in life
As mentioned before, recreational activities (the healthy ones) tend to make people's lives more fulfilling.
Staying idle for too long is not ideal; being idle for long amounts of time provides you opportunities to think of past, future, and current problems in your life, which may result in more stress.
Of course, there are times when idleness has its uses. You can use it to give yourself the opportunity to see issues that you did not know existed and time to think about how to possibly resolve them.
3. Social Bonding
There are certain recreational activities, like sports, that allow you or force you to socialize with other people, which may develop into friendships.
4. Provides a Break from Stressful Situations
Relating to the number one reason, recreational activities are an excellent way to take a short break from stressful situations.
And here is how:
- Engaging in recreational activities distracts the mind and temporarily shift focus away from the thing that causes you stress.
- Recreational activities like reading, listening to music, or spending time in nature, can help calm the nerves and alleviate tension.
- If the recreational activity has a winning condition (like sports), winning it may provide a sense of accomplishment, which will boost your self-esteem.
5. Provides a Sense of Achievement
As mentioned before, achieving goals in recreational activities can provide a sense of accomplishment, which will boost your self-esteem.
This positive reinforcement can contribute to a more optimistic outlook on life.
THINGS TO KEEP IN MIND
Keep in mind, there's a distinction between enjoying recreational activities and deriving pleasure from immoral ones.
Recreational activities are meant to provide enjoyment and relaxation in a positive, constructive manner.
On the other hand, immoral activities may seek pleasure but often disregard ethical standards and can cause harm.
